Information for homeowners The new EPA ruling applies to homes and commercial building that children occupy that were built before 1978. Lead paint was used prior to 1978. Exposure to dust or paint chips from lead paint has been shown to cause nervous system disorders such as ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, agression, and low IQ. Exposure to lead dust can also cause kidney damage.
If you choose to do renovation work on your own home, you should follow the guidelines the EPA has developed to protect you, your family, and any future residents.
If you hire someone to do the renovation work for you, make sure they are EPA certified. They will be able to show you their certificate and the company they work for will have this seal.
